¡Enhorabuena Upper Primary!

Oh la la!

Miss Tex’s class used their assembly this week to discuss the ‘rumour’ that all French people are arrogant!  The children used hilarious sketches to illustrate examples of arrogance, before putting a fabulous fashion show, to demonstrate the sheer style of the French people.  Of course, Miss Tex’s assemblies would not be complete without an update of Hugo’s and Lucy’s romance, especially with Valentine’s day drawing near.  By the end of the assembly, everyone was convinced that France is full fantastic people and ready to jump on a plane straight to Paris.  C’est magnifique!

Upper Primary Assembly

Grammar is great – and it’s all around us!  The Upper Primary Class used their assembly to teach the rest of the school about the grammatical features they have been learning such as alliteration, personification, metaphors, simile and onomatopoeia.  After explanations and examples had been given, it was time for the fun to begin!  Each child performed a modern pop song which demonstrated one of the grammatical features – and the audience had to guess which one!  The kids had great fun, belting out hits such as ‘Wrecking Ball’, ‘Firework’ and ‘Catch a grenade’.  The whole school was singing and dancing before lessons had even began!

Christmas Play

This year’s Infant Christmas play, ‘The Sleepy Shepherd’, was held at the Casa de Cultura, L’Alfas del Pi, to allow the family, friends and neighbours of our pupils to enjoy the heartwarming story of how a sleepy shepherd came to witness the birth of baby Jesus.  Natasha Paterson was the star of the show, but all of the children, from the Pre-nursery class, up to Year 2, put on a great performance.

The play was followed by some festive singing and dancing learned in Fernando’s Spanish classes, as the whole school sang ‘En Navidad’ and prepared the whole of L’Alfas del Pi for a very Merry Christmas.

Victorian Day

The Upper Primary class finished their topic on the Victorians by dressing up and experiencing at Day at a Victorian School.  Each pupil was given a Victorian name and strict guidelines on punishments and sanctions were outlined before the day had even begun!

Children wrote with slate and chalk,, and later, using quill pens and ink.  They learned and recited poetry by heart and sang their times tables.  At play time, they played a traditional games of conkers, flown over especially from England!

No Victorian Day would be complete without a visit from the School inspector.  Mrs Cousins entered the class, inspecting finger nails and cleanliness, ordering some children to have their hair cut and washed too!

International Day 19th October 2014

It’s October again and L’Alfas del Pi’s 7th International Day! The young Business students, here at Sierra Bernia School, put their brains together to sharpen their ‘young enterprise’ skills and participated the fourth time at this annual, local event. Representing four countries, each student contributed in different ways: decorating the stand, cooking food to sell, dressing up in traditional clothes, selling the produce and applying marketing and promotional skills to ensure a successful business.  The Business Studies students wish to thank the school office, their parents and all their teachers for helping them in this real life project and business experience. Well done to all the students who participated and to Mrs Ahuja and Mrs Cousins for their organisation and leadership skills.

Our little scientists

On Friday, Lower primary showed what they had learnt in science. They all dressed up as doctors and scientists to explain the parts of the body, sing a song about it, and make a little experiment about our heart rate!

They had great fun preparing it and performing in front of the school!

KEEP CALM AND GO TO SBS

With ration books in hand, the upper Primary class took the school back in time to life after the war for their assembly this week. The class explained how the campaign ‘Dig for Victory’ was introduced to help families grow vegetables to supplement their rationed food allowances. They also performed a short play in a Post WW2 style shop to demonstrate how ration coupons were exchanged for food.  They also discussed the ‘Make Do and Mend’ campaign in which people were encourage to reuse, fix and hand down clothes.  The class were lucky enough to have had the opportunity to speak to Mr Allan‘s mum, Mrs Allan, and the class shared her memories with the rest of the school.

The children shared some of their own childhood memories with the school before testing other pupils, teachers and parents memories too!  The morning finished with a quick rendition of The Yellow Submarine’ as the Class told explained how their studies were taking them to life in the 1960’s and ‘The Beatles’.  A great song for everyone to join in with and a great way to start a Friday morning!

Vive la France!

This week in Lower Primary Assembly we have tested our knowledge on France and French people! We have talked about stereotypes, learnt about history, monuments and French language. Our favourite part was when one of our students taught us “Head, shoulders, knees and toes” in French!

We hope that everyone has learnt new things about this fabulous country (and even more fabulous people!)

Merci beaucoup les choux!

A level business students visited Caixa Bank

A level business students visited Caixa Bank on Wednesday, the 30th Oct 2013. Mr. Muñoz, the Bank manager, in a very lucid manner, made clear to our students, concepts of equity, overdraft facilities, credit policies, business plans, business and personal loans and many more. These concepts are important topics in their syllabus. He kindly spoke in detail the difference in the theory and the reality. How the theory is Business studies teacher as a guideline and applied in the real business world. My students came out very clear and more equipped with these concepts as they left his office. Thank you Mrs. Sue Green  for fixing these meeting for us and  a bigger thank you to Mr. Muñoz.

Going Green!

The Upper Primary Class have been busy growing their own fruits, vegetables and flowers right here in the school!  We have germinated our own seeds and beans, planted them in individual pots and kept a weekly diary of how our plants are progressing.  To aid our learning we have also been on a couple of school trips

Grupo Navarro – Polop

We visited the Grupo Navarro Garden Centre in Polop where we learned how to care for our seedlings and how to help to look after our local area by replanting wild flowers and grasses through a technique called Nendo Dango.   We then hit the shops and bought more seeds, flowers and plants to fill our school garden.

Mendoza Allotment – Alfaz del Pi

Maria welcomed us into her beautiful home, just across the raod from school, and showed us around her fantastic gardens.  We saw tomato plants, beans and grapes before looking at the farm animals that live their too.  After seeing the chickens, pigs and rabbits, we explored the vast orange groves and as lunch time approached, Maria showed us some really cute puppies and a very proud peacock!

Thank You!

We would to say a big thank you to Maria from Mendoza and Pep from Grupo Navarro for helping  us learn about growing plants and we look forward to inviting them to our school garden to show them our harvest at the end of the year!

On Your Marks, Get Set, GO!

After postponing our Sports Day for two because of bad weather, we finally managed to get ourselves some sunshine organised  and spent the entire day doing sports.  As usual, we split ourselves into four teams and competed against each other in some of the classis races such as the egg and spoon race, the tug of war and the sprint.  Then in true SBS style we had our ‘more unique races such as the ‘teddy bear between the legs race’, and, everyone’s favourite on a hot summer’s day, ‘fill the bottle of water’ race!
This year we added an extra race to finish our day of sports – it also added a little humour to!  Our Senior Team Captains demonstrated their ability to perform  almost any challenge given to them as they raced in fancy dress, carrying their egg in a spoon, with a Teddy Bear between their legs, and a bean bag on their heads!  IT WAS HILARIOUS!!!!!!!
They day ended with a short ceremony in the assembly to announce the winners.  Congratulations to this year’s winning team THE BLUES, led by the one and only Menno Martens.  Special Congratulations also to Angela for being an amazing Junior Captain; leading her team with enthusiasm and encouragement whilst having them all very well organised indeed!
Our next Sporting event is the Swimming Gala at the Polideprtivo on Friday, June 21st.
SEE YOU THERE!!!!

Preparations in Progress!

Preparations are well under way for our school’s 40th birthday party on 22nd March 2013. Thanks to the fantastic skills of our teachers, the girls from Dramakidz and Pascalle from Streetwise, we are busy rehearsing dances, plays and special performances across the school. Everyone is involved and super excited. Join us on the 22nd March from 1pm to help us celebrate our anniversary, meet ex pupils and teachers and to see our fabulous show,  of course!

Save The Children

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored our run for ‘Save the Children’.

It was exhausting, but we ran around the track at the Polideportivo until we ran out of time, ensuring we could raise as much as possible for the children in Africa.  Ahmar arranged a ‘penalty shoot-out’ area too as another way for us to raise more funds!  Dimitry and Menno were extremely focused as they ran continuously around the track for an hour without stopping for a break, followed by Christian and then Jorgen.  Watch this space to find out who ran the furthest in each class and how much we raised for Save the Children!

Well Done Everyone!

Day of the Tree

We celebrated the ‘Day of the Tree’ this week by planting over 100 trees around our school.  Each class came out one by one to help prepare the soil, dig holes in the ground, and plant a tree.  Luckily for us, Dimitry, Menno and Xavier provided extra muscle power for the younger classes.  It was hard work, but definitely worth while. We are looking forward to watching our tress grow as we do over the coming years.  Please come to our school and see our trees too!

Rules of the Road

We had a visit from our local police man the other day.  No, it wasn’t because someone was in trouble!  It was because he came to talk to us about how to act safely and responsibly on the roads.  We learned how to walk along roads safely as pedestrians and then we had the chance to learn how to read road signs, road markings and traffic lights when we were let loose on a mini road network in our playground!  It was great fun!  There were real traffic lights, stop signs, give way signs, zebra crossings and even a roundabout.  We brought our own bikes and scooters to school and navigated our way through the traffic, avoiding pedestrians and other vehicles.  What a fun way to learn about road safety!
