ANCIENT GREECE ASSEMBLY

This trimester Year 5 &6 have been studying the ancient Greeks in their Literacy, History, ICT and Geography lessons and had such fun learning about the ancient Greek gods, myths, culture and architecture.
On Friday 29th April they presented successfully their own versions of famous myths and the work they have been doing in ICT (Mazes on Minecraft).

More specifically, they acted out the following myths:
Pandora’s Box
Theseus and the Minotaur and
Medusa’s myth.

Students were dressed-up as the well-known Gods, Goddesses and heroes/ heroines.
The Ancient Greeks believed that all the gods came from Gaia (g-eye-a) which means the Earth, and Uranus which is the sky. They thought they were like adult humans – always falling in love, arguing, having children, playing music and partying.

Like the Romans, the Greeks believed that different gods were responsible for different things.
The Greeks believed that twelve most important gods and goddesses lived at the top of Mount Olympus. They were a family and, just like a human family, they argued as well as looking after each other.

After studying them and the different parts of life that they represented our students made a shield for each god showing their symbol.

Visit from Norway

Sierra Bernia School got the opportunity to host a group of 12 secondary students and 4 teachers from Norway. The students of Ajford School in Norway were visiting Spain to exchange cultural experiences with their peer in this country. It was a fabulous experience and we had a very pleasant morning with them. We are pleased with the results. We see our students playing the games taught by our guest group and discussing the differences between the two systems. This proves it was a successful activity.

Sports Day 2016

On Friday 15th April, Sierra Bernia School held its annual Sports Day. Students competed to earn points in order to be crowned ‘Sports Team of the Year’. Every single student from pre-nursery to Year 10 took part and earned points for their team in events like relay races, bean bag throw and sprints. After a fierce day of activities, competition and a lot of fun! There were only 10 points which separated the teams. Team Red and Green both came in at equal 3rd with 210 points. Team Purple were just pipped at the post with Team Blue who won with a thrilling 220 points. These results show that every point counts and every students’ contribution was important. A special mention to our Year 11 students for their superb assistance in activities throughout the day.  Well done to all team captains for their marvellous leadership, teachers for co-ordinating the event and of course students who gave 100% effort and got involved to make the day a great success.

Food technology: A talk on Public Health.

Mrs. Pepa Cortés, a pharmacist and a Master in Public Health, honoured our school by her visit.  She made our students aware of government regulations connected to the food industry. She lucidly explained complicated concepts in as simple words as possible.  She spoke about Pasteurisation, meat treatments before consumption, care of sea food, various types of bacteria, some necessary for food processes. The students showed interest by asking questions relevant to the topic. We thank Mrs. Pepa Cortés for the same.

Book week

Children across the school ‘buddied up to read to each other to kick off Book Week at Sierra Bernia School. The children chose to listen to a story book, read by a teacher, and then completed a fun activity.  Each class painted their favourite character on to a tyre planter.  They will look amazing in the spring filled with flowers!  We read books in the dark with our torches.  The children and teachers came to school dressed in their pyjamas.  They read their favourite bedtime stories and drank hot chocolate!

Carnival day! Secondary School fun educational activity! GYMKHANA!

The carnival celebrations in the school were in full spring on the last day before the half term break.  But being “teachers” we could not keep ourselves from making the activities as educational as possible. Secondary school enjoyed a morning full of fun activities in each subject.  They worked in four groups.  Each group had students from each year group.  Each activity lasted 15 minutes.
We attach some pictures.   The students seem to have enjoyed the morning.

LKS3 Food Technology Project

The students of Year 7 and 8 spent two weeks learning the art of doing up a table for a special dinner.  They learned the art of folding napkins in different ways, doing various artistic manners of floating candles, colour combinations of table mats with flowers, having a theme…and many other important details.   The teams were called The Proms and The little mermaids.   The little mermaids won the consolation price.  They had a theme of underwater presentation.  The winning time was the Proms.  They had a beautiful layout very tastefully done.  Many thanks to Ms Cousins, Mr. McLennan and Ms Vaughan for their time and kind support to my students.   They came in with their students to encourage this project and helped us voting the winners of this competition.
